Course Description: Students will further their understanding of spoken and written Spanish through use of a variety of methods, including individual and group work, oral presentations and in-class projects and events. Hispanic culture will play a key role in introducing the students to more natural uses of the target language.

Class Preparation: Each student should come to class every day with the following: textbook, notebook, pen or pencil and Spanish/English dictionary. Failure to bring one or more of these items will adversely affect the student's learning experience.

Extra Credit Opportunities: On the campus of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, the Zimmerli Art Museum has “Dark Dreams: The Prints of Francisco Goya” until December 14. Hispanic Heritage Month is in full swing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. Check out the website for dates and times of specific events. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in NYC has a Picasso sculpture exhibit right now, and a Dali exhibit is coming in November. More info is available on their website. Keep your eyes on this spot for more opportunities.

Week of Sept 8, 2008-Students will begin the Etapa preliminar!! Mon we will read and paraphrase (in English) pp. 2-3, and talk about hispanohablantes en los EEUU. On Tues we will review the conjugations of regular present tense verbs-- you know, the ones from Spanish 1... Students will complete Act. 1 and 2, and then do the extra help act from TE, using vocab quiz verbs. Wed we will do some more reading and paraphrasing ( pp. 4-5) to practice our vocabulary and sentence structure, and on Thurs we are going to test our memories to review verbs- which are regular, stem-changing, or irregular? Using the readings we have just done, in groups, students will underline all the verbs en espanol, and then decide which category they fall in. Which group can get the most correct answers? Fri we will review irregular yo verbs, and then use those verbs in sentences (act. 4). We will then work in groups to write our own encuestas.(TE p. 8) Week of Sept. 15, 2008- On Mon and Tues students will use their encuesta to interview their classmates, and then write up a short paragraph about their results. Wed and Thurs we will work on vocabulary from p. 27. Do you remember how some of these verbs are conjugated? What do they mean? Fri Students will begin to paraphrase pp. 10-11 in groups-instruction on how to paraphrase in Spanish will be discussed, as well as expectations for student efforts (we cannot paraphrase in Spanish at the same level we are able to in English!) Complete for homework. Week of Sept. 22, 2008- Mon we continue to read and paraphrase in Spanish, for a change of pace! This will give you a chance to practice your vocabulary skills with your comprehension. Read pp. 14-15 and tell me what they mean, en espanol. We will review with the class. Tues we will begin our review of of the conjugation of the preterite tense- what fun!!! Today we will just go over the endings, and do a few examples of each (p.) on the board Wed is the review of spelling change verbs in the preterite (car-qu, etc.) pp. 16-17, act. 11-13- what other verbs do you know?) Thurs we will go over stem changes in the preterite, on pp. 20-21, and do activities 15-17 on pp. 20-21. Fri will be a review of the irregular preterite (p 24) and then act. 19-20. Week of Sept. 29, 2008- This is a short week. Mon and Thurs we will review for the test on Friday, using handouts from other books and workbooks, to reinforce what we have already reviewed. Fri is, of course, the test. Week of October 6, 2008- Students will spend the week reviewing the preterite forms and how to use them. Worksheets will be handed out and students will be able to practice the conjugations. Mon-pp. 32-33 read and paraphrase, choose your own group to outline and illustrate for homework. Tues-Review homework and quiz. Any suggestions for other groups? Wed -Hand out review packets from Spanish Two Years workbook. Students will work on packets in class- groups are fine. Thurs- No school!!! Fri-Vocab and a movie- students will watch a movie and pull out relevant vocabulary. Week of October 13, 2008-Students will continue reviewing the preterite, and we will have another test on just this tense. Mon- complete review of packet on board. Tues and Wed- Have students do questions and answers from Spanish for Mastery workbooks (handout). Thurs-review QandA and any other questions about conjugating the preterite (regular, irregular, stem-changing and spelling change.) test tomorrow. Fri-Test on preterite conjugations. Week of Oct 20, 2008- We will begin with a review of the vocabulary of Unidad 1, Etapa 1, and use the vocabulary to describe famous people. Be prepared to bring in a photo to describe. Mon-We will group ourselves according to physical characteristics - let's SPEAK Spanish!!! (p. 35 TE) -Tues-We will review the uses of ser and estar. (pp. 34-39- descriptions.) Do Act. 5,6,8; other class work will be oral. Handout on for extra help with conjugations and usage. Wed.- Field Trip!!! Thurs.- Complete the handout on the board. Questions? Do Act. 9 and 10 (p.10-41) Fri-Write a composition describing a famous person, and we will guess who it is. Week of Oct, 27, 2008- This week we will work on the preterite conjugations for the last time. Mon will be time for working on a handout complete with conjugations of all types of preterite verbs, taken from Spanish for Mastery 2. Tues and Wed students will break into groups and create posters that outline the tenses, and then make a presentation to the class on their poster, and an explanation of the preterite for Thurs. Remember, there is test help after school on Wed. Fri is our test- happy hallowe'en!! Week of November 10,2008- We will review the conjugation of the imperfect tense- and learn the SONG! (pp. 40-41, Actividades 9,10,11. Mon- p. 41- review the tense orally- who remembers it? Do act. 12 orally. Tues- Do act 15 on p. 43- Cuando era nino... This paragraph will be graded. Wed.- Thurs. We will be working on the dreaded Imperfect vs. Preterite in sentences. First we will review the rules of usage, then do Act. 12 and 13 on p.42. I will also bring in related materials and activities from other Books/workbooks to review in class. YOU MUST BE ABLE to conjugate the preterite and the imperfect to do this work, so make sure you study the conjugations and their spellings. Fri we will watch part of a movie in Spanish to practice our listening skills. … Second Marking Period: Week of November 17, 2008– Because we are still having problems with the preterite, on Mon we will do one more set of worksheets from Curso Primero before moving on the rest of the imperfect. Tues and Wed we will do a selection of worksheets for practice of the imperfect (from the Spanish for Mastery 2 workbook), and Thurs is for a review of Ser and Estar, done on the board. Fri will be review of these pages. Week of November 24, 2008– Short week!! This week we will do our review of the rest of ser and estar on Mon, and on Tues have a test on ser and estar and conjugating the imperfect. Wed will be for a review game. Week of December 1, 2008-Another new verb tense - or two!! This week we will review the present perfect and past perfect (pluperfect) tenses. Mon and Tues- Review the vocabulary on p. 51. On p. 44 we will explain the present perfect tense and do Act. 16. I will also use examples from other books/workbooks to give you more practice. What does the present perfect translate to? Can you pick out a participle in English? In Spanish? Wed and Thurs-What is the past perfect? Look at the bottom of p. 44, and at the review handouts. We will discuss how to use the tenses in class, and do Act. 17 on p. 45, as well as supplemental work. Fri- test on the perfect tenses. Week of December 8, 2008- Mon and Tues we will review the present perfect one more time. On Wed we will begin learning all the new vocabulary of Unidad 1, Etapa 3. pp. 76-77 , we will read about Manolo, and all his difficulties. Then we will do Act. 1 on p.78- how many things can you find? Thurs we will do the activities on pp. 80-81 to practice our chores and review saber and conocer. On Friday we will have time to ask questions about projects and watch the rest of our movie. Week of December 15, 2008- Mon and Tues we will complete our projects on Art at the Met. Wed we will begin a review of the future tense- one set of endings and only 10 irregulars! You can do this!! Thurs and Fri we will do activities related to the future. make sure you study for the quizzes. Week of December 22, 2008- Mon and Tues we will catch up on any work you are having problems with? Do you remember how to conjugate the present perfect? Week of January 5, 2009- This week we need to finish up Etapa 2 to be ready for the midterms. On Mon we will review the vocabulary on p. 97, and then do actividades 1-4 on pp. 80-81. Tues we will begin our review of reflexive verbs- can you remember the correct pronouns to use? and when do we use them? pp. 82-83 Wed we will have a handout of reflexive verb activities to practice the conjugation.
