Course Description:   LATIN PROSE

Textbook: LATIN FOR AMERICANS BOOK II AND BOOK III 

Expectations:  Students will become proficient in translating and understanding the historical, cultural, and literary significance of actual works by Julius Caesar and Cicero .  

Syllabus:  Jason and the Argonauts (Book II); De Bello Gallico - Julius Caesar (Book II); selections from De Amicitia, Pro Caelio, and Ad Catilinam  - Cicero (Book III).

DE BELLO GALLICO  - GRAMMAR OBJECTIVES:  To review comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs; To review the Ablative of Respect; To review the conjugation of FIO; To review the gerundive with AD; To review indirect statements and to learn about subordinate clauses in indirect discourse; To review CUM clauses; to learn the Dative of Possession; To learn the subjunctive in anticipatory clauses; To  learn about causal clauses with QUOD and QUONIAM; To review impersonal verbs; To review the hortatory and jussive subjunctive; To review the IUBEO construction; To review present and future infinitives in indirect statement; To review the Datives of Purpose and Reference (Double Dative); To review indirect question.

LITERARY AND HISTORICAL OBJECTIVES:  Students will understand the significance of Julius Caesar's position and achievements in relationship to the political climate of his lifetime.  Students will appreciate the significance of Caesar's conquests and military skills in Gaul in relation to Rome and to the native tribes of Gaul, exploring both viewpoints.  Students will evaluate Caesar's literary form and the purpose of his missives to promote his cause and ambition with the Senate.
