Course Description:  Basic Latin grammar and cultural background of ancient Rome , including Roman/Greek mythology.  Special attention is given to English word derivation from Latin roots.

Textbook:  LATIN FOR AMERICANS BOOK I - UNITS I - V

Expectations:  Students will bring textbooks, 3 subject notebooks for Grammar, Derivatives, and Culture, as well as writing utensils to class everyday.  Students will take notes, and participate in classroom language learning activities on a daily basis.  Vocal participation is a must.  Good questions are of special value.

Students will keep an on-going derivative notebook of English cognates derived from the vocabulary words in each lesson.  A list of 8 - 10 English derivatives is optimal for each vocabulary word.  These notebooks will be collected and graded every 2 units.

OBJECTIVES:  Unit I – To learn some geography of the Roman world; to learn how to ask and answer simple questions; to become familiar with connected Latin prose and dialogues; to begin learning declensions and conjugations; to learn to increase and decode English vocabulary using Latin root words and prefixes.  

Unit II - To learn about the expansion of the Roman world; to become familiar with connected prose and  and dialogues in Latin; to start learning declensions and conjugations.

Unit III - To learn about daily life in ancient Rome; to learn about the position of Roman slaves; to expand knowledge of case uses and verb tenses.

Unit IV - To learn more about Roman history and daily life and about some famous Romans; To learn third and fourth conjugations.

Unit V - To learn about some of the famous Roman myths and legends; To learn about the founding of Rome and the Aeneid; To learn the future tense for third and fourth conjugation; To learn the imperfect tense for all conjugations; To learn third declension nouns.

OBJECTIVES FOR JAN. 5 - 9:  TO LEARN TO FORM SECOND DECLENSION MASCULINE NOUNS ENDING IN -R; TO LEARN THE SINGULAR AND PLURAL FORMS OF PRESENT IMPERATIVE. 

MON., JAN. 5:  Write out both O.P. practices on pages 63 and 64 regarding both -R Nouns and Imperative verbs.  Also be sure that the derivatives for Lesson IX have been completed and that your derivative notebook is up to date and conforms to the layout guidelines listed above in the Format hyperlink.  Also read over the captions to the pictures in Lesson IX.
