Course Description: This course continues to introduce the student to the basic fundamentals of the language; a foundation in vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and an appreciation of cultures and the attitudes of the Hispanic world.  This course continues to allow the student to comprehensively acquire vocabulary while also employing skills in the usage of grammar and syntax.  Reading materials, videos, compact discs and the Internet will help to acquaint the student with customs, culture and current events in Spanish-speaking countries.

Expectations: Students will come prepared to class everyday with their notebooks, textbooks and a writing utensil.  All quizzes and tests must be taken using a black or blue ink.  The textbook must be covered at all times.  Work is assigned every night and is always checked.  It may be collected and graded at any time.  If absent, it is the student's responsibility to make up the missed work.  Quizzes and tests are always announced ahead of time.  There will always be a review before a quiz or test.  Projects will be assigned during the course of the school year.  Class participation and positive attitude are always encouraged and they are also a wonderful addition to the class.  Students will receive a class grade based on how well they have fulfilled their responsibilities as a student in class.  This grade is given at the interim and at the end of the marking period.  All tests, quizzes, projects and collected work will be assigned a specific point value.  The amount of points will be determined by the worth of the work. Your marking period grade is determined based on what percentage of points the students have accumulated out of the total possible points.  The Mid-Year Exam is worth 33 1/3 % and the Final Exam is worth 66 2/3%.  Being on time is mandatory.  If a student is late, disciplinary actions will be taken.  Keep in mind that learning another language is a lot of fun.

Weekly lessons for week of 12/15/08 - 01/05/09:

Objectives: Unidad 1/ Etapa 2:  Students will be able to comment on food, continue to talk about the past, express activity preferences and discuss fine art in Spanish.  Students will also learn about famous Spanish artists and their works of art.

12/15/08: Finish review of the stem-changing verbs in the present tense by using worksheet and study guides.  Write all the answers on the board.  Make all the necessary corrections.  Homework:  Study for quiz tomorrow.

 

12/16/08: Quiz: Stem-Changing verbs in the present tense.  Distribute review sheets for test of Unidad 1/ Etapa 2.  Students will start in class and finish review sheets/ study guides for tomorrow.

 

12/17/08: Go over all the activities on the board.   Make all the necessary corrections.  Homework:  Study for test tomorrow. Book, pages 68- 69, do activities # 1-3 to review and reinforce the stem-changing verbs in the present tense.  Homework:  Study part 2 of the vocabulary for quiz tomorrow.

 

12/18/08:  Test- Unidad 1/ Etapa 2.  Distribute new vocabulary list for Unidad 1/ Etapa 3.  Homework:  Using book, page 95, look up the translations of the new vocabulary list.

 

12/19/08: Snow Day- No school.

Objectives:  Unidad 1/ Etapa 3: Students will be able to discuss ways to communicate, react to news, ask for and give information and talk about things and people they know in Spanish.

 

12/22/08: Go over new vocabulary list.  Reinforce correct pronunciation and translation of the new words.  Go over objectives for this lesson and review some nationalities in Spanish.  Using map and nationalities found in page 80, students will be able to talk about their nationalities in Spanish.  Homework:  Go over first 15 nouns.

 

12/23/08: Using different activities- word search, incomplete sentences and translations, reinforce new vocabulary list.

01/05/09: Review new vocabulary list orally and by using a short dictation.  Book, pages 74-75, read and ask questions to check comprehension.  Using worksheet with incomplete sentences, go over captions once again and answer more questions.  Homework:  Book, page 78- do activity #3 and study first set of nouns.

 

01/06/08: Continue working with nouns from this lesson by using worksheet.  Remind students that the schedule for this week's quizzes are: Wed. and Friday.  Book, page 80- adjectives of nationality in Spanish.  Go over rules for agreement in number and gender.  Using worksheet- reinforce this adjectives of nationality.  Homework:  Study part 1 of nouns for quiz tomorrow.

 

01/07/08: Quiz: Part 1 of nouns.  Book, page 81- verbs "saber & conocer"- to know.  Show conjugation and specific uses on the board.  Start working with these verbs by using worksheet with different activities- incomplete sentences and translations of sentences.  Homework:  study the verbs "saber and conocer" and the specifc uses of thse verbs.

 

01/08/09: Review part 2 of nouns for quiz tomorrow.  Continue working with "saber and conocer" by using worksheet for additional reinforcement.  Homework:  Study part 2 of nouns for quiz tomorrow.

 

01/09/09: Quiz: Part 2 of nouns.  Book, pages 76-77- read all the captions.  Using worksheet, complete the sentences and check comprehension by answering questions based on the reading selection of "En Vivo".  Homework:  Book, page 78, do activities # 1 & 2.
